Nordland Sculpture Landscape

Skulpturelandskap Nordland

Artscape Nordland is an international collection of art, which includes 36 works of art in 34 municipalities, with specifically invited artists from 18 countries. The project started in 1992, and the first phase was completed in 1998, since then a sculpture was added in 2009, 2010, and the last one in 2015.

The sculptures are located out in the beautiful and diverse landscape, an art gallery free of walls and roof – and with an area of 40.000 square kilometres.   This makes the artwork surroundings visible, so that the place gets a new dimension. The dialogue that happens between the work and the viewer will show different ways to understand or interpret art.

The commissioning:  the artists in Artscape Nordland developed their work following a visit to the municipality.  Through meetings that took place, the artists familiarized themselves with the nature as well as the culture and then they presented a sketch for a work placed at a certain location in the municipality.

Dan Graham “Untitled” Lynvær. This solitary convex mirror sculpture at an abandoned ferry station at the edge of a fjord reflects the scenery back at the viewer.

Toshikatsu Endo “the head” near Ramberg. As a symbol, it is an expression of eternal legalities in a concept of time which is circular, unlike the linear concept of time we are accustomed to in the Western conceptual model.
