connectivity of oceans
What happens in the Arctic affects us all. For the past six years I have been documenting the connectivity of our global oceans, the melting Arctic Sea ice, rising tides, storm surges that undercut the rapidly eroding Sussex chalk cliffs. Undertaking two field trips to Norway, a country I know well and regular trips to my local Sussex Seven Sisters cliffs my chalk and earth material paintings endeavour to raise an awareness of the impermanence, beauty and fragility of our coastal horizons.

Into the Arctic 2022 30x30cm
voyage of discovery
a 2,500 nautical mile round trip in winter 2022 to witness and record the changing Norwegian coastal landscape first hand - travelling on the Coastal Express that runs a daily service stopping day and night in small and large towns a lifeline for these communities since 1893
undercut cliffs
witnessed over 8 years cliff falls, undercut and eroding cliffs, man meets the sea - piles of sea defence pebbles that have now buried the white chalk rock pools - a rapidly changing coastal landscape. Painting cloth with chalk in the rock pools, making work in response to the beauty & fragility of this coastal horizon. Slow mediative hand stitched text from my observations adds additional context
Lofoten Islands Norway
artist residency May 2023
The Lofoten Islands are situated off the Norwegian Arctic Coast an archipelago on the edge of world with a breathtakingly beautiful landscape and unique blue light that has inspired artists for centuries. I was based at the Kunstner Huset AIR (Artist House), a residency for Norwegian and Swedish artists since 1934 situated in the historic fishing harbour of Svolvær surrounded by the racks of drying cod.
