Combining outdoor exploration with studio practice the workshop aims to inspire an observational sketchbook practice sharing innovative and intuitive ways to visually document resources. Connecting to land, walking is fundamental to immerse yourself in place, slowing down to listen, notice and experience the rhythms of nature. 

With a growing awareness of sustainable creative practices using natural materials, students will experiment using earth pigments in a soya milk binder to document their observations on watercolour paper and cloth creating beautiful muted palettes.

Observational Sketchbook - connecting to land

the 3-day workshop offers a safe nurturing space to take time out to discover what resonates with you and encourage the development of a personal reflective sketchbook practice.

Immersing ourselves in the inspirational setting at The Waldron, we will combine outdoor exploration with studio practice to discover innovative and intuitive ways to visually document gathered resources.   With a focus on natural materials, students will be introduced to painting with earth pigments mixed in the soya milk binder Susie developed for her studio practice.

Observational Sketchbook

2 day workshop: 9.30-5pm

The workshop is held at my studio on Ashdown Forest, a quiet nurturing space suitable for two students.  Combining outdoor exploration with studio practice we will spending time walking, observing gathering resources from the Ashdown Forest including local clay that make wonderful pigment to work with on paper and cloth.
